Insolvency litigation funder Manolete Partners has released its full year results for the year ended 31 March 2021. Despite government measures that suppressed the number of insolvencies, the company made a record 198 new case investments in the year and a further record 135 case completions. Manolete reported an average Money Multiple of 2.7x and ROI of 168% on 388 completed cases since inception.
UK-based Disputed.io has increased investment to over £1.5 million following its latest round of investment. The company's first product was CaseFunnel, an automated claims solution, and it has also recently created FinLegal, a litigation funding marketplace. The latest investors in the business include Perry Blacher a FinTech specialist with 25 years’ experience building and operating online businesses and Alan Falach, the co-founder of Global Legal Group, a London-based global company specialising in the legal market.
Longford Capital Management, LP has announced that it has entered into a $50 million funding agreement with Willkie Farr & Gallagher LLP to provide equity capital to fund attorneys’ fees and litigation costs, and to monetize the value of meritorious legal claims for Willkie’s clients involved in commercial litigation cases handled by lawyers based in Willkie’s Chicago office.
Ana Carolina Salomão Queiroz of PGMBM and Gian Kull of Syz Capital note that while a plethora of ESG strategies have emerged in the equities space, the world of alternatives still lacks a deep pool of ESG solutions, but they feel that litigation finance may lead the way if and when the EU issues a code of conduct for the responsible private funding of litigation through which litigation funding strategies could obtain ESG labels.
Law professors Anthony Sebok of the Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law and Maya Steinitz of the Iowa College of Law both agree that it’s too early to tell whether the new disclosure requirements in New Jersey will lead to changes in litigation tactics in cases with outside funding, though Maya emphasises that the disclosure rules are very significant, as can be inferred from the passions of parties on both sides.
