Meland Budwick hires Barry Kumar in Miami

Barry Kumar has joined law firm Meland Budwick in Miami as a Partner. Barry was previously a Managing Director at litigation finance advisor Westfleet Advisors where he assisted claimholders in raising capital to litigate their commercial cases.

A former federal prosecutor and investment banker, Barry Kamar is also as a seasoned trial lawyer and corporate dealmaker, with about 10 years experience serving with the United States Department of Justice and the United States Securities and Exchange Commission. Barry also was previously an investment banker at Morgan Stanley & Co.

Big Law Warms Up to Litigation Finance as Deals Pot Hits $2.8B

Litigation funding companies in the U.S. committed $2.8 billion toward new deals in 2021, according to an annual survey by Westfleet Advisors. This represents an 11% increase from the prior year and can be attributed in part to rising interest from the world’s biggest law firms. While more money was spent overall, the average size of deals has declined by around 20% since 2020 to $6.5 million. The survey showed that new funds have popped up specialising in smaller deal sizes.

WestFleet Advisors has conducted a comprehensive review of 52 reported U.S. trial court decisions through July 2021 that address discovery attempts seeking either litigation funding agreements or communications with funders by funded parties or their counsel and has found that, despite aggressive disclosure efforts, U.S. courts continue to protect the confidentiality of litigation funding.
