Brendan Dyer of Woodsford explains why partnering with a funder at a late stage of litigation is often a great solution in situations of fee fatigue, where a client has been involved in protracted litigation and is evaluating whether the potential recovery justifies the additional time and money required to prevail, as well as for “accidental contingency situations”, where the scope of the matter has crept beyond the expectations of the funder and the client, and the funder faces the specter of significant financial risk once the budget runs out.
Woodsford is backing a claim against Sony Group filed on 19 August 2022 in the UK’s Competition Appeal Tribunal (CAT). It is alleged that Sony is breaching UK and EU competition law by abusing its dominant position resulting in consumers paying inflated prices for digital PlayStation games and add-on content.
Woodsford has announced a major expansion of its global team. In the US, Ryan Schultz joins as Vice President, Business Development. He joins from the Intellectual Property & Technology Group at Robins Kaplan LLP, a preeminent trial law firm in the US, where he was a Partner. Ryan will be looking to build on and grow Woodsford’s intellectual property partnerships. He will be based in Minneapolis. In the UK, four new hires have joined the London-based underwriting and finance teams.
