California takes on private equity influence over law firms

California's AB 2305 has passed the state legislature and is now awaiting Governor Newsom's signature. The bill would block private equity firms from controlling legal decisions in law firms, like picking clients or settling cases. But it leaves a loophole open, since it doesn't touch the back-office companies private equity typically uses to buy into firms instead of owning them directly.
