CASL funds Victorian class action on behalf of foreign home buyers

CASL is funding a Victorian class action seeking the repayment of up to $500 million paid by citizens of New Zealand, South Africa, Germany, India, Finland, Norway, Japan and Switzerland in foreigner stamp duty surcharges and land tax surcharges.

The class action, which was brought by law firm Johnson Winter Slattery, argues the surcharges breach Australia’s double taxation commitments under treaties with these countries.
