CAT approves landmark UK Google Play Store settlement

The Competition Appeal Tribunal has approved the £260 million Google Play Store settlement. It is the largest payout to a class the Tribunal has ever approved. The Tribunal found the deal just and reasonable. Of the total, £160 million goes to eligible UK app developers. The other £100 million covers funder Bench Walk Advisors, lawyers, experts and insurers. That is £34 million below their £134 million contractual entitlement. Professor Barry Rodger brought the opt-out claim, and Geradin Partners acted for him. Bench Walk funded the case. Google made no admission of liability. UK developers who sold apps or digital content through the Play Store can register at googleplaystoredeveloperclaim.com. A separate consumer claim against Google, seeking more than £1 billion, goes to trial on 5 October.
