Class action firms could triple their take of $110m BHP settlement

Australia’s BHP shareholder class action over the Samarco dam collapse has sparked controversy after plaintiff firms Maurice Blackburn and Phi Finney McDonald moved to lift their combined fee cap from 18% to as much as 50% of a $110 million settlement, increasing the funder’s commission to up to 27.5% and potentially doubling the total payout to lawyers and funders compared with the original model.
