Judge critical of law firm as Aboriginal stolen wages class action reaches $180 million settlement

The Australian Federal Court has approved a $180 million settlement in a class action on behalf of Aboriginal workers in the Northern Territory who were paid low or no wages between 1933 and 1971. Chief Justice Mortimer said that while funder LLS Fund Services — which will get a $30 million cut from the settlement — was a commercial business that sought "to make a profit, like any other business", its involvement "very much reduces the risk" for claimants.
