Legal-Bay provides pre-settlement advances to Albany Diocese claimants as $148M settlement faces scrutiny

Legal-Bay is offering funding to clergy abuse claimants tied to the Roman Catholic Diocese of Albany’s proposed $148 million settlement, positioning itself to fill liquidity gaps as the bankruptcy process stretches and uncertainty over deal approval lingers.
The litigation funder said it has added the Albany case to its active roster of pre-settlement funding opportunities following an agreement between the diocese and the tort claimants committee to resolve roughly 440 claims. The proposed recovery, however, sits at the lower end of recent US diocesan settlements and may encounter resistance from both the bankruptcy court and individual survivors, each of whom must sign on.
That uncertainty is extending timelines for payouts, a dynamic funders are increasingly exploiting by offering advances to claimants awaiting resolution. Legal-Bay said its underwriting team is actively assessing claims in Albany and similar cases, where multi-year Chapter 11 proceedings have left plaintiffs without access to expected recoveries.
Legal-Bay’s updated pipeline includes both approved and pending settlements across multiple jurisdictions, including Rockville Centre, Rochester, Syracuse, and Buffalo in New York, as well as Camden, New Jersey, and New Orleans, Louisiana. Proposed and approved settlements in those cases range from about $150 million to more than $300 million.
Legal-Bay emphasized that its advances are not guarantees of recovery and remain contingent on claim validation within the bankruptcy process.
