Partner, Legal Operations - ALFA

Overview:

The Partner, Legal Operations will help screen for suitable litigation investments, conduct detailed legal analysis and due diligence while evaluating litigation investments, and actively/continuously monitor the progress of funded cases for developments that may impact the case outcomes. The successful candidate will play a key role in finding, diligencing, and guiding legal investments to superior returns on behalf of a premier, rapidly growing litigation investment fund.

Case Evaluation and Selection:

  • Work closely with the investment team to assess the potential risks and rewards of legal cases under consideration for financing.

  • Provide legal expertise and guidance to the team during the investment evaluation process.

  • Participate in investment committee meetings, presenting legal analyses and recommendations.

  • Negotiate and structure legal agreements with law firms and litigants seeking funding.

Legal Due Diligence:

  • Thoroughly review and analyze legal documents, including complaints, motions, briefs, and other court filings related to potential investments.

  • Evaluate the legal merits and strength of cases, assessing the likelihood of success based on applicable laws, precedents, and evidentiary support.

  • Identify potential legal risks, challenges, and obstacles that could impact the outcome of the case.

  • Conduct legal research and analysis to support investment decisions.

Ongoing Case Monitoring:

  • Monitor the progress of funded cases, reviewing legal filings, court rulings, and other developments that may impact the case outcomes.

  • Provide regular updates and legal assessments to the investment team, investment committee, and fund managers.

  • Analyze investment budgets at the case level to advise on variances that affect funding.

  • Identify potential opportunities or risks that may arise during the course of litigation and advise on appropriate strategies.

Litigation Strategy:

  • Collaborate with the investment team and external legal counsel to develop and refine litigation strategies for funded cases.

  • Identify potential settlement opportunities and advise on negotiations and settlement terms.

  • Ensure compliance with legal and regulatory requirements related to litigation financing.

Legal Research and Analysis:

  • Stay up-to-date with the latest legal developments, case law, and regulatory changes that may impact the fund's investments.

  • Conduct in-depth legal research and analysis to support the fund's investment decisions and strategies.

  • Provide legal guidance and training to the investment team and other stakeholders as needed.

Qualifications:

  • The successful candidate will have substantial experience in litigation, excellent legal research and writing abilities, and a keen eye for assessing legal risks and potential returns. Previous experience in litigation finance is strongly preferred.

  • Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from an accredited law school.

  • Minimum of 5-8 years of experience in litigation, preferably with a focus on areas relevant to the fund's investment portfolio (e.g., smaller civil litigation, commercial litigation, contract disputes, employment issues, personal injury, landlord-tenant matters, debt collection, and consumer issues).

  • Minimum of 2-3 years of experience in litigation finance in both investment advisory and investment monitoring capacities.

  • Exceptional legal research, writing, and analytical skills.

  • Strong knowledge of relevant litigation finance laws, regulations, and procedures.

  • Proven track record of success in litigation or related legal practice areas.

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively present complex legal concepts to non-legal professionals.

  • Ability to work collaboratively with cross-functional teams and external parties.

  • Entrepreneurial mindset and a keen understanding of business objectives and investment risk/reward analysis.

  • High energy, self-direction, and a can-do attitude to contribute massively in a small, niche, fast-paced, and dynamic environment.

  • This position will be remote-first with minimal expected travel.
