State lawmakers pass bills to punish unethical lawyers, limit hedge funds that influence cases

California lawmakers have sent legislation to Gov. Gavin Newsom that would prohibit litigation funders and other private investors from influencing case strategy, settlement decisions or client intake, while also barring law firms from using third-party funding to market for cases and giving the State Bar new enforcement authority.
